A trek to the Base Camp of Mount Everest, world’s highest mountain (8850 m), is high on the wish list of many trekkers. The trail leads alongside the foot of mighty Himalaya giants, towering high above the sky. The views from Kala Pattar of Mt Everest, and many other seven and eight thousand peaks are just unforgettable.
After Namche Bazar you climb above the tree line quite quickly and you find yourself walking in a stunning high altitude landscape. The walk to Everest Base Camp (5364 m) from Gorakhshep should not be missed. You walk on the Khumbu Glaciar, surrounded by snow and ice. The Nuptse is so close it looks like you can touch it. From Everest Base Camp you have a close view of the Khumbu Ice Fall, a huge wall of ice, only one of the big challenges the Everest expeditions face.
Flying in and out of Lukla (2840 m), set already amidst the Himalaya, you need about 2 weeks for the Everest Base Camp trek. The trek described below combines the trek to Everest Base Camp with a visit to the stunning Gokyo Lakes. From Gokyo you cross the Cho La (5420 m), which brings you into the Khumbu Valley in which the Everest Base Camp lies. The stretch between Gokyo and Khumbu is part of the Upper GHT.
The region is dotted with well equipped lodges, run by the friendly Sherpa people.
As with this trek you climb high very quickly, it is important to take acclimatization days, and to be aware of signs of altitude sickness.
